I asked any councillor this week to let us know how much money is spent on OMB hearings annually. Chris Harker was kind enough to answer my question. His
response, "This year the Town has approximately $1.5 Million in its budget for legal matters, most of which is OMB related matters."
I find the amount of money spent on litigation by the Town of Caledon shocking. What the citizens of this community need to know is, if councillors know
ahead of time that the chances of winning when an issue comes before the OMB are slim, do the councillors still vote to take that issue to the OMB? Is
Council using the OMB to make a political statement or do councillors really think that they stand a chance of winning? How successful has the Town been at
winning cases before the OMB?
I find it distressing to think that councillors use the OMB “to make a point” knowing full well that the chances of winning are slim. Am I wrong?
I am leaving next week’s Column open to any or all members of Council to justify spending $ 1.5 Million Dollars annually for litigation purposes.
